How 'Friends' Saved My Cats' Lives

No, seriously, the TV show ‘Friends’ is responsible for both of my cats being alive right now. So allow me to share a story with you about how a 15 year plus long obsession with the hit show has made me grateful for, well, obsessions.

friendsLogo So no one told you this show would save your cat's liiiiiiives *clap clap clap*

On the evening of Saturday, June 14th I left my friend’s house to go home. She stopped me before I got into my car to give me some flowers, “Miranda, wait! A lily for you and your mom.”

I turned back excitedly and took them both from her. Lilies are my favorite flowers, and my mom is a plant and flower buff, and these happened to be huge, gorgeous Tiger Lilies. I set them carefully in my car’s cup holder and went home where I then deposited them into a cup of water, set them on the counter where my mom would see them in the morning, and went to sleep with both my cats snuggled in bed.

The offending Tiger Lilies, in all of their vibrant glory.

Sunday morning dawned bright and with anticipation of family converging on my mom’s house. We woke up lazily around 9:30 and my mom started to make breakfast. I went into the kitchen, noting that the lily cup had been moved from the counter to the windowsill. I thought nothing of it, figuring that whoever was up before me wanted more counter space. I pointed them out to my mom, saying, “Rachel gave these to us!”

At that moment my kitty, Picard, who will be one year old next month, hopped onto the windowsill and sauntered toward the flowers. She took a delicate sniff, then licked quickly at the inner stems, swallowing two pollen buds in one gulp.

I huffed and laughed, commenting on what a bad cat she was, and picked her up to put her on the floor. It was at that moment, which a shock of horror, that a scene from ‘Friends’ drifted into my mind (Season 7, Episode 2 "The One With Rachel's Book" for those that are curious):

Monica: It sucks! No swing band! No lilies!

Phoebe: But that’s good! You don’t want lilies! If a cat ate them, it would die!

There are literally no screen caps of the scene in question, so take this only-sort-of-related-photo from the same episode.

I turned to my mom.

“Aren’t lilies toxic to cats? Phoebe says so on ‘Friends’ but I don’t know if she’s joking or not!”

My mom looked troubled, a small furrow appearing in her brow as she thought.

“I really don’t know.”

It was time to take action, so I first consulted my phone. A quick google search returned a long, long list of websites that screamed about the dangers of lilies to cats. I scanned the websites reading about symptoms showing within 6-12 hours, renal failure within 2-3 days, and immediate vet care being necessary.

With a thick throat I called the emergency vet, hoping that the Internet at large was overreacting and underinformed (hey, it happens). When I finally had a technician on the phone though she explained to me that two pollen buds was a fatal dosage. Tears immediately filled my eyes. I nodded, unseen to her, as she spoke of the severity and how I needed to get to their office right away.

The next few minutes was a flurry of clothing (I being in pajamas at the time), enticing wafts of bacon, my mom on the phone telling my Grandma that someone else would be picking her up from the ferry in half an hour instead of me, and a scramble for the cat carrier. During this chaos my mom’s boyfriend overheard the commotion and struck me with further dread.

“One of the flowers was on the ground when I got up this morning,” he told me, “It had chew marks on it and I just put it back.”

At this point we grabbed my second cat, Data, and put him in his carrier too. We had no proof, aside from his unwavering love of plants and obsession for dragging things around, and I really wasn’t interested in taking chances. The only thing that kept me from falling into a pit of pure hysteria was the fact that the flowers had been in the house less than 12 hours and Data was still acting normally.

My boyfriend and I had a tense drive to the emergency vet, both cats in tow and Data yowling the whole way. Upon our arrival we gave our furry babies lots of hugs and kisses before they were whisked away for immediate blood work, vomit inducing medication, and intravenous fluids to hopefully flush their systems before their kidneys could absorb the toxins.

kittiesInCones
We were able to visit them the next day and neither were pleased about their cone situations.

Fortunately, amazingly, magnificently, both of the cats are fine. They stayed at the emergency vet until Tuesday morning when they were both deemed OK to go home. Each of their blood tests showed either no anomolies (for Picard) or a teeny bit elevated calcium level for Data which has been looked into. I asked the vet why that was: I honestly expected to be told about crazy levels and dangerous brushes with death, especially since I watched Picard eat two pollen buds. The vet’s best explanation was that we got them to the vet so quickly and as a result they were able to flush their systems before any damage could take place.

So thank you to ‘Friends’, the show creators, runners, and writers. Thank you for Phoebe’s wacky character and being concerned that cats wouldn’t be able to attend Monica’s wedding. Thank you for bringing a show into the world that is so consuming that daily, run-of-the-mill words become trigger words to remember a scene or a line.

Thank you for saving my cats’ lives!

Remember that lilies are toxic to cats! Many plants and flowers are, so be sure to consult guides or your veterinarian to find out which ones are safe to bring into a cat filled home.

Tattoos of a Gamer

(note: this article originally posted on abitofgeek.blogspot.com in January of 2013. I started a mini series on gamer tattoos, but didn't finish it before taking my hiatus. I've moved the existing entries here and will continue the rest of the series here as well)

Until the age of twenty I constantly swore that I'd never get any tattoos. I insisted there was nothing I liked so much to want it on my body permanently, I couldn't decide where it would go anyway, and there was that crippling, hypothetical paranoia that it would turn out poorly. But bring on age twenty, and my best friend and I started talking about getting Triforce tattoos. We had been friends for so long, and we both loved the Legend of Zelda dearly. After a year of talking, planning, and deciding, we finally went for it. On top of the Triforce having a pleasant and simple design, it has such a wonderful meaning. The symbol for power, wisdom, and courage, and the possessor, if their heart be pure, having the ability to bring the world into a golden age of prosperity.

Prior to the big day I encountered a fair amount of grief from outsiders regarding my tattoo of choice. They simply couldn't believe that something from a video game was a worthy subject for permanent body art. It was difficult to explain to them what, exactly, the Triforce meant to me. It was more than a game, it was also a symbol of my friendship with Jacki, my childhood, and a representation of good in the world.

People could get onboard with the friendship thing (although some still found that to be a bad idea. "What if you stop being friends?"), but mostly they thought the game-based aspect to be absurd ("What if in twenty years you don't play that game anymore?").

There's no way for me to know what's going to happen, or how I'm going to feel, in twenty years. I can only know how I think and feel now. I love video games so much, they are a huge part of my life, and I've played them since I could hold a controller. I've had my Triforce for over five years now and I don't regret it. It makes me smile, it brings me happiness. I'm reminded of fond memories of playing Ocarina of Time, and of my best friend and everything we've been through together. For my 22nd birthday I acquired a second gaming related tattoo, my beloved Blooper.

People didn't question this decision nearly as much as they did for my Triforce. I guess once you have one gaming tattoo, it's not a big deal to get a second. They did wonder why Blooper, though. My answer for that is two fold: 1. Mario is awesome, and 2. I love sea life. I like to joke that it was a thrifty two-in-one tattoo, taking care of the need for a Mario piece and sea life at the same time. Bloopers also happen to be my favorite enemy in the Mario series. And I love this little guy! I don't wear tank tops a lot, so whenever I do I feel pleased knowing that he's behind me staring at everyone that I pass. I also frequently forget that he's there, so sometimes I'll catch him in a mirror and spin around startled to get a better look. People ask me, "What is your tattoo?" to which I reply, "It's a Blooper, the squid enemy from Mario." It elicits strange looks from a fair number of inquirers, but at the very least everyone can agree that he's a cutie.

Check back through the next two weeks, because I'll be showcasing more gamer tattoos from my friends! See their art and hear their stories, and if you have a tattoo and story of your own please feel free to share it here!

Two Years Free of GameStop: A Retrospective.

Next month marks a whopping two years since I quit my job at GameStop. February 2011 was a time of huge change for me! I was planning a trip to Ireland, and then after that I moved down to California to begin the next chapter of my life. It's a new year now, 2013 ahoy, and I'm feeling nostalgic about the old game store.
Is the power really to the players? Is it? Source.

The other day a friend wanted to pop down to a new location a few towns over from where I worked, but he wondered if I'd be bothered about seeing people I used to work with:

"Unless you don't want to see anyone you know," he said.

"Oh I won't know anyone that works at this location," I replied.

We walk into the store and the first person I saw was a manager whom I'd met a few times, but spoke on the phone with on a regular basis when I was a manager. He had been with the company for a long time and frequently transferred to new or troubled stores to clean things up. My jaw nearly hit the floor with irony and delight.

I spoke to him, he remembered me, and we chatted briefly about our tenure with GameStop. It was a nice visit, and reminded me of one of the best things about my time there: the people. One of my best friends now started out as a simple co-worker, and some of my best memories are of goofing off with my long-term manager. When I talk about the ridiculous and bad things that happened during my six year employment people often ask why I stayed for so long. My immediate answer is, "Because I loved my co-workers."

The free poster perk wasn't bad, either!

On a different and more selfish level, it's also because I loved being in the game industry. No matter how peripherally. I had constant access to release date lists, e-mails about pre-release information, and GameInformer. I could look at the magazines if I wanted, read all the backs of all the boxes, ask customers first hand what they thought of titles, and I could watch the games rise and fall in popularity. Based off of trade in trends I could tell which games were long or short, which were good or bad. I knew the rares from the commons. I had an expansive knowledge base even though I had experienced only a fraction of the games for myself.

Of course it wasn't all fun and games (pun intended?). I was yelled at by customers, there were late nights and long open-to-close shifts. Stores were dirty, people were mean, co-workers were incompetent. I dealt with thieves, irresponsible children, and I lost my temper a time or two. Once resulting in a broken phone and another in a dislodged ceiling tile. My wage was bad and my hours were inconsistent, but part of me really loved my job. And I was fiercely dedicated to my store. I took great pride in working there.

It's strange to go into my old location and see people I don't know and floor setups that I didn't build. I just want to wander behind the counter and start processing trade ins all, "It's cool I used to be a manager here."

I don't think they'd like that, though.

I'm Never Without My Friends.

Just about everyone has a favorite TV show. You know the one, where you can quote it at any time, watch it whenever, and you really know every episode by heart. For me (and my sister) that show is Friends.
The cast of Friends. Source.

We started watching it in the spring of 1998 and we never looked back. It was the only TV show that was ever a tradition in my house. Thursday night was Friends night, and my sister, mom and I would gather 'round the TV to watch the newest episode. During the last season my sister was in a number of extra curricular activities, some that took place on Thursday nights and therefore prevented her from watching the new episode as it aired. When this happened my mom and I would record it and then wait until she got home to watch it.

At this point my sister and I both own the complete series DVD box set and we watch them constantly. If I'm writing an article, there's a good chance that I have Friends on in the background. If my sister is in the room with me then most likely every other sentence we say is actually a Friends quote. I generally watch the episodes on my computer while I surf the web. I don't need to see the video anymore to know what's happening. I can see character movement and faces in my mind's eye.

In September of 2011 I went on a tour of the Warner Bros. studio and experienced a number of Friends set locations. It was a literal dream come true, and you can read all about it if you'd like. After the tour my friend and I were milling about the gift shop and in the Friends merchandise section there was a TV, with no sound, playing a random episode. I stood watching the TV while listening to the dialogue in my head and laughing at the unheard jokes.

A screenshot of gifs from one of my favorite scenes ever. Full gif set here.

Some people dislike this show, and I honestly don't get why. I find it to be wholesome, while somehow mildly inappropriate, and absolutely hysterical. I can't count the number of times I've seen each episode, and yet I laugh just as hard at the jokes now as I did the first time around.

Friends means the world to my sister and me. It's an inexplicable bond and I don't know what I'd do if I couldn't watch this show whenever I felt the need. What is your favorite show?

So many choices and so little time.

I'm out of excuses. This week fails to deliver my big surprise. I expected to have it done before I left for Washington on Monday, but I didn't, and I arrived back in California late Wednesday night. Now I have my friends with me (yay!) and there was no chance of me finishing it in time.

The following weeks will be full of all sorts of fun, geeky happenings. The friends that are visiting are big into games themselves; the video and board variety! We have over a week of board game, tabletop game and video game goodness planned. I am psyched! The three of us all have 3DSes loaded with Four Swords adventure. It'll be awesome to play all together. Plus, I also have a DSi that has Four Swords on it, so Andrew can join us for the maximum four player experience!

Today will see us at the game store in search of a copy of the Battlestar Galactica board game. Here's hoping we find it!

I apologize for the short (and late!) entry. It has been super fun madness since my friends arrived and I've hardly had a chance to sit down and write anything!

So many to choose from!

Have a great weekend!
