How to Keep Up: Fandoms & a Busy Life

It's no easy task being a fan girl. The lists of shows and movies I want to watch, as well as books that I want to read and games that I want to play, are near never-ending. With a full-time job, a relationship to maintain, and a cat that needs attention, how can I be expected to keep up with my fandoms?

With a little bit of planning.

penny arcade 'operation myriad' comic What my calendar currently looks like.

The first thing to do is figure out which title is at the top of each list. For instance, Game of Thrones and Star Trek: The Next Generation are at the top of my TV lists. The 'Outlander' book series is the top priority for reading, and Final Fantasy 8 along with The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds are my gaming top picks.

So now you know what to focus your attention on, the next question is WHEN. This second step is to make categories and create a time for each one.

Books:

I've chosen to re-consume the 'Outlander' series in audio format and I listen almost exclusively in the car. My work commute immediately became more enjoyable and I have found that I no longer mind taking quick trips to the store because it means I get to progress in the story. If people have jobs that allow listening to music, or a commute that's at least ten minutes long, then I definitely recommend this route! It's quite nice killing two birds with one stone. Does anyone else feel like driving is a huge waste of time? I could be doing so many other things! But I digress. I've buzzed through three of the seven books in the series over the past two months and it leaves a lot of time open for the many other forms of media that I plan to consume.

The more common way to make sure a book gets read is to do so right before bed. That is my practice if I don't have access to an audio version! Obviously some people don't like audiobooks and in that case, this option isn't for you. Some of the ways I schedule TV shows and video games might be, though!

stayed up all night reading ecard
The very real dangers of reading before bed.

TV Shows:

I'm currently watching both Game of Thrones and TNG with other people: TNG with my boyfriend, and Game of Thrones with two of our friends. This makes it a bit harder because it requires planning multiple schedules. In our instance, TNG can happen nearly every evening because both my boyfriend and I have evenings off. We watch probably three nights a week, usually one episode at a time. This is easy to work around dinnertime, too. As for Game of Thrones, we have Sunday nights specifically set aside to watch one episode. Juggling four different schedules means we all had to be willing to commit to the one evening that we *knew* we'd all be available. If all parties are in, then this is the best way to go. So far this has worked out quite nicely for us! It creates a lot of suspense for the show and has the added bonus of making sure we see our friends at least once a week. Pick at least one day and stick to it no matter what! Exceptional circumstances aside, that is.

This method can apply very nicely to movies, too. We were doing movie nights on Sundays but decided to switch to watching Game of Thrones!

She doesn't want to hear about why you missed last week's episode. Just don't let it happen again.

Video Games:

Playing through Final Fantasy 8 has not been an easy task. I no longer have hours upon hours of free time to bury into an expansive RPG and as such this has proven to be the most challenging fandom/hobby to incorporate. I play it with my boyfriend, which means he watches me play and gets to re-live the story for the first time through my eyes and reactions. It's his favorite game of all time (evidence) and is a great bonding experience for the two of us. For me it's very nice that it's another thing that we can do together in spite of the fact that it's a single player game. For these extended play excursions I choose sleep-in days off when there aren't other plans. That doesn't happen often which is why this has proved to be the hardest to keep up with.

Tackling A Link Between World's is kind of easier and harder at the same time. It's for the 3DS which means portable, anywhere/anytime play, but it's also Zelda which means that once I start playing then I want to be able to get into the game! I keep my 3DS with me at all times and utilize lunch breaks at work, and more often, the half an hour or so before I fall asleep. Many people use the time before they fall asleep to read (see above), but since I'm going with the audio format I can use this time to save Hyrule yet again.

If you get too tired these things will be more than happy to wake you.

Many of my hobbies involve spending time with other people, but I do have interests that are singular (writing for this site and paper sculpting for starters) and I also have TV shows that I watch by myself. About once a week my boyfriend and I have "separate" time where he'll catch up on, say, Sons of Anarchy, and I'll watch New Girl! I'm fortunate to have a boyfriend and friends that I love spending time with above all else, and the "downside" is that I don't have much time leftover for 'me' activities. What a problem to have! ;)

The final step is to stick to your schedule! I'm a big fan of planning.

How do you keep up with your hobbies? Do you plan a lot, or go with whatever feels right at the moment?

I'm Never Without My Friends.

Just about everyone has a favorite TV show. You know the one, where you can quote it at any time, watch it whenever, and you really know every episode by heart. For me (and my sister) that show is Friends.
The cast of Friends. Source.

We started watching it in the spring of 1998 and we never looked back. It was the only TV show that was ever a tradition in my house. Thursday night was Friends night, and my sister, mom and I would gather 'round the TV to watch the newest episode. During the last season my sister was in a number of extra curricular activities, some that took place on Thursday nights and therefore prevented her from watching the new episode as it aired. When this happened my mom and I would record it and then wait until she got home to watch it.

At this point my sister and I both own the complete series DVD box set and we watch them constantly. If I'm writing an article, there's a good chance that I have Friends on in the background. If my sister is in the room with me then most likely every other sentence we say is actually a Friends quote. I generally watch the episodes on my computer while I surf the web. I don't need to see the video anymore to know what's happening. I can see character movement and faces in my mind's eye.

In September of 2011 I went on a tour of the Warner Bros. studio and experienced a number of Friends set locations. It was a literal dream come true, and you can read all about it if you'd like. After the tour my friend and I were milling about the gift shop and in the Friends merchandise section there was a TV, with no sound, playing a random episode. I stood watching the TV while listening to the dialogue in my head and laughing at the unheard jokes.

A screenshot of gifs from one of my favorite scenes ever. Full gif set here.

Some people dislike this show, and I honestly don't get why. I find it to be wholesome, while somehow mildly inappropriate, and absolutely hysterical. I can't count the number of times I've seen each episode, and yet I laugh just as hard at the jokes now as I did the first time around.

Friends means the world to my sister and me. It's an inexplicable bond and I don't know what I'd do if I couldn't watch this show whenever I felt the need. What is your favorite show?

Get Your Disney Digital Fix with Wreck-It Ralph

It's safe to say that the population at large is excited about Wreck-It Ralph, the newest animated feature from Disney. Most people won't need long reviews and critical opinions to decide whether or not they want to flock to the movies to see it. This won't be a long and critical review, I just want a chance to talk about what a gem of a film it ended up being!

Wreck-It Ralph has a great message of reaching for the stars, trying new things, and also of finding satisfaction with the lives that we have. It almost seems contradictory, but in the case of Ralph he comes to love his life after some soul searching and star reaching.

Along the way he meets an amazing cast of characters, many of which pay fan service to an older generation of gamers. The careful and diligent viewer will notice hundreds of tiny, wonderful things strewn throughout the movie. Personally I wish I had had multiple sets of eyes just so I could take in everything. That's a first for me.

Once the exciting gaming settings of the first half an hour passed and we really settled into the story, I was amazed by the number of twists and surprises. The story was eloquently wound and complex, also extremely funny. I did find myself thinking it was a bit sophisticated for children, and even a little inappropriate at times. Perhaps though, as an adult, I simply caught all of the jokes and little kids won't. Either way certain scenes felt a little more PG but not quite PG-13. It's a fine line, but they were at least always clever!

It's no surprise, but is still worth mentioning, that the whole movie is visually stunning. Every game world is so full, colorful and fun. Again I found myself needing more sets of eyes! It's astounding to think of the development process for the game Sugar Rush; they made it an absolute delight to look at.

Wreck-It Ralph is a great film, and makes a fun theatre visit for families and grown-ups alike. Be sure to catch it while it's still showing! Since it's a Disney film you'll have at least a month.

Has anyone else seen it? What are your thoughts?

Halloween For The Rest Of Us

As we welcome October into our lives, I find myself deeply harassed like I am every year.
Excuse me while I remain unamused and feeling as though I'm being stalked by demon creatures.
Redead image from here!

While I attempt to enjoy movies in the theatre and TV shows, I am bombarded with trailers for horror movies. Screaming in the background, frightened, sweaty faces in close up shots, and more and more often twitchy, disjointed filming tactics that thoroughly mess with my mind.

I love Halloween, but I prefer a Scooby Doo approach. You know, one that's not actually scary. I used to throw a Halloween party every year for my friends and they always wanted to watch a horror movie. So when it came time I'd sit in the kitchen and eat candy by myself while everyone else screamed and laughed in the living room.

It's high time I made a Halloween play list for myself and any other scaredy-cats out there like me!

1. Hocus Pocus

This is the epitome of Halloween for me. I've watched this movie every year with my sister for as long as I can remember. At least since 1993, at any rate. It's a great combination of a story about witches who suck the life out of little girls, a token cool high school dude trying to woo the popular girl, annoying younger sister, and hysterical performances from the witches in question: Mary, Sarah and Winifred.

Who out there actually hasn't seen this movie? It has probably shaped my life in more ways than I realize. Like, a deep rooted love for cats, and an intense desire to learn French, and the fact that I am extremely wary of supposed "fake" witchcraft. If you've never seen it, make this Halloween count and get your hands on a copy!

2. Casper

Ah, Devon Sawa. He may not have been the J.T.T. of his age, but he certainly had his place. And even though Mr. Sawa proper was only in Casper for about five minutes, he did a stellar job as the voice of Casper, everyone's favorite friendly ghost!

Instead the bulk of screen time is given over to Christina Ricci, who plays an outcast teenager who is new in town thanks to her father moving them to a new house. She quickly learns that her house is home to some ghosts though, and things just move right along from there. The movie culminates in a giant Halloween party the likes of which I can't even dream of, and one of my aspirations in life is to throw a recreation of that party.

People ask why I throw parties every year if I hate scary movies? It's because Casper has given me something to look up to.

I'm also pretty sure I had a Casper poster in my room as a child.

3. Halloween is Grinch Night

I will tell you now that it's impossible to go wrong with Dr. Seuss. Doesn't really matter the context, the man had a solution for everything. You hate funny colored food? We have a solution. But right now we're talking about needing non-scary Halloween films.

When little Eukariah Who leaves his house for the Euphemism on a stormy night filled with sour-sweet wind, he encounters the horrible Grinch out wreaking havoc across Whoville. The whole thing has a great classic cartoon vibe with plenty of Seussian thrown in. The most terrifying part of this film? The Grinch repeatedly running over a flower with his wagon wheel, to make extra sure it is crushed.

4. Coraline

Hands down, this is the scariest movie on my list. I saw it completely unaware of what I would be experiencing. Let me tell you that I felt legitimate terror in the movie theatre, but coupled with total intrigue and fascination and damn if stop motion doesn't impress me.

Even though I'd need to be a part of Coraline's adventures into the Other World with company in tow and a blanket to potentially hide under, it sits firmly on my Halloween film list. Fun fact: Coraline was my first foray into the world of Neil Gaiman.

5. ParaNorman

This one is actually still in theatres, so I'm not sure how I'll be watching it for Halloween this year, but, having seen it, there's no way I could make a Halloween movie list without it! Norman is a lonesome boy who can see and speak with ghosts. Hence the lonesome part. He has a hysterical, if stereotypical, older sister, a mother who loves and supports him and a father who has no patience for the ghost antics.

As Halloween approaches, Norman becomes tasked with saving the town of Blithe Hallow, Massachusetts from a witch's curse that is normally kept at bay by someone else. Armed with little to no knowledge and a mostly reluctant group of helpers, Norman searches for the answers to save the day.

It is another gorgeous stop motion film, and some of the ending sequences are so beautiful that I found it difficult to focus on the story progression. Oh, and the story progression is amazing. It was all worth being a little bit spooked at times.

Honorable mention: It's The Great Pumpkin Charlie Brown! Because... I love Charlie Brown.
Honorable mention: The Nightmare Before Christmas. It's an obvious choice, but I prefer it as a Christmas movie, actually!

What will you be watching this Halloween?
