'Outlander' Fandom Fueled Products

You've seen the Doctor Who lip balms, and you've checked out the Legend of Zelda temple candles*. Now, take a look at the newest, exciting fandom items from A Bit of Geek and Earthtastic!:

outlanderProducts

I don't mean this to sound so damn cheesy, but I'm incredibly excited! It's a blast to work with my sister (the one-woman wonder who runs Earthtastic!) to incorporate fandoms into her thriving, wonderful business. Together we get to dream up (and make!) items that neither of us could handle on our own.

Keep reading to learn about how these items came to be, or go ahead and jump to her etsy shop to check out their full contents and descriptions.

Unsure of what Outlander even is? Here's a brief description: a historical fiction, time-traveling, 18th-century-Scotland-romance/medical journal with war and adventure. The author frequently jokes that her books are impossible to categorize, with many book stores having no idea which section they belong in. It is a novel series spanning 8 books (so far), with a number of side novels involving secondary characters. If you're looking for a new book series to fall in love with, then this is it.

My sister and I are both huge fans of the Outlander book series, and we're ecstatic at the fact that it'll be making its way to Starz as a high production TV show starting next month (Saturday, August 9th). Our mother and grandmother, plus an aunt or two, enjoy the series as well, making it something of a family "thing" and therefore close to our hearts.

Months and months ago we began to discuss ideas for the next big fandom collection that we could release. We're both currently re-reading the series, and it was brought up that Claire, the protagonist, concocts many healing items to use in the throes of her dangerous, 18th century life. Seeing as my sister already makes a myriad of body care products, it seemed like the perfect alley for our pet project.

We set to work noting specific creams and ointments that Claire makes (she being a 1940s combat nurse, and well practiced in medicine), jotting down their uses and components. This was no small feat; the books are enormous! I'm currently listening to the audio versions, while my sister is reading them in physical format. This resulted in texts flying back and forth, quoting characters and marking page numbers. Together, and slowly over time, my sister and I compiled a large list of amazing Outlander items to begin making.

I am incredibly proud to announce that the following items are now available for purchase: skin balm, marigold salve, camphorated goose grease, and Jamie's soap. The skin balm is effective for soothing rough, cracked, and sore areas. Marigold salve will heal broken, sore, and cut skin. Camphorated goose grease aids in clearing sinuses and easing internal congestion. Lastly, Jamie's soap is an intoxicating blend of smoke, musk, and sweetness, aimed to mimic the descriptions of Claire's husband, Jamie, while also cleaning the user (duh).

Loads of love and care have gone into these products. They're all made in small batches to preserve freshness, and are created entirely by hand by my sister, Cassidy. The labels were designed (from start to finish) by me, and we spent a few happy and giggly afternoons creating the perfect Jamie scent. Claire is such an inspirational character, which makes pretending to be her, via bringing her balms and ointments to life, that much more special and fun. We have many more ideas coming down the pipes, too!

Be sure to take a look at the products, which are legitimately wonderful (and effective) and not just flashy fandom items, and if you're curious to watch the premiere of Outlander on Starz but you don't have cable, then you're in luck! On Saturday, August 2nd, Starz will be simulcasting the first episode for free across multiple platforms, including their website. You can all get a taste of that magic that IS Outlander. I also encourage you to read the books! They're simply amazing.

It's Dangerous to Go Alone, Take These!

If you’re a long time reader you might recall that October of last year A Bit of Geek and Earthtastic! (a natural body care company) teamed up to bring you some fabulously designed Doctor Who lip balms. Well, we’re at it again, and this time it’s something different and very exciting!

temple candle labels    temple candle lids

Introducing: Ocarina of Time Temple Candles! That’s right, this set of five carefully crafted, wonderfully smelling candles are now available for purchase and your olfactory enjoyment. You can grab them as a complete set for $28, or individually for $6 a piece.

These were designed and inspired after the five temples in The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. We have Forest, Fire, Water, Spirit, and Shadow. I realize that in the strategy guide the player is supposed to go to the Shadow temple, and then the Spirit temple, but… I never played it that way. So, in my mind, it goes Spirit and then Shadow. Hah! ALSO, there’s no need to get technical about how there are actually kind of eight temples in Ocarina of Time. The first three are dungeons, so they don't "count", and my goal was to make this paragraph as succinct as possible. That plan obviously has been ruined.

Anywho, allow me to attempt to break down the miraculous and painstakingly selected scents for you. Do you have any idea how many times I sniffed myself into light-headedness while choosing these aromas? At least five, probably more like seven. We even created new scents for you! Yes, we spent a lot of time pouring over vials of scented oil, mixing them together, and cackling wickedly as we found the perfect ratios and aromas.

forest temple   forest temple lid

Forest Temple - A sweet, green scent, mixed with wisps of light gold, sure to ensnare and encapsulate, transporting the sniffer into the Sacred Meadow, where the sun shines down on distant memories.

fire temple label     fire temple lid

Fire Temple - A smooth, smoky scent, complete with a sharp and fruity side. Allow it to fill your mind with images of bubbling lava, flaming torches, and Gorons who desperately want to go home.

water temple label     water temple lid

Water Temple - A light and, well, watery smell, rounded off with a cool finish. The combination transports the mind to visions of Lake Hylia, with reeds lazily waving back and forth as you don your iron boots.

spirit temple label     spirit temple lid

Spirit Temple - A potent, golden and warm scent, reminiscent of ancient and sandy structures. You’re sure to hear the distinctive music of the Desert Colossus, and suddenly wonder where all of this sand came from.

shadow temple label     shadow temple lid

Shadow Temple - A heady aroma, with flowery and distinctively purple tones. This scent is bold, sure to fill your home with intoxicating thoughts of adventure, danger, and possibly the horrifying Bongo Bongo.

Each candle was hand crafted by Cassidy in a smoke-free and carefully maintained work space. She puts great care and love into her work, and these fun team-up items are no exception. The labels were made by me, and it was quite the undertaking :D

Together or apart, they make for beautiful and geeky decoration pieces in your home! We tested them in our homes, and found that their scent “throw” was strong and satisfactory. Once the candle has burned out, you’re even left with an awesome storage tin. Perhaps a good place to put your extra rupees?

Be sure to check out the etsy listings if you want to grab a set for yourself. We hope you love the candles as much as we do!

Doctor Who Lip Balm Announcement and Giveaway! *Updated*

I am extremely excited to announce a new line of products launching from Earthtastic! in correlation with A Bit of Geek: Doctor Who themed lip balms!!

Earthtastic! is a line of natural body and skin care products started by my sister Cassidy. She creates small, handmade batches of preservative and chemical free products that are good for the environment and good for you, too. They are also organic (when possible), vegan, and nut free, so those with allergies can rest easy. She always offers custom orders to make sure customers get the exact product that they want and need.

A little bit ago we were talking about how we wished we could team up together, but that our focuses were very different (hers being body products and mine being gaming and technology) and we were stumped, and that's where the Doctor Who line was born!

Created with the conscientious geek in mind, this line of lip balms has been designed with the intention of encapsulating the Doctor Who universe. As a default they come unscented, but you can request either orange or blueberry during your order for no additional cost! Buy them separately or together as a beautiful gift pack for yourself or your Doctor loving friend.

The line includes Ten's Sonic Screwdriver, Eleven's Sonic Screwdriver, Sonic Lipstick, Gallifrey, and the TARDIS. Inside each gift box is a cloth bag wrapped in a blue ribbon for a lovely presentation, and the gift box includes one of four "greetings": Fantastic!, Geronimo!, Allons-y!, and Hello, sweetie.

The Sonic Lipstick is available as a balm only or as a lip tint! Just make your request during the order!

Be sure to check out all of the listings on the Earthtastic! Geekery etsy page to learn more about the products and the business. I'm positive that you'll like what you read!
